Precedent Studies

Understanding architecture before designing it.

Precedent studies are a fundamental part of my design process. Rather than using precedents simply as visual inspiration, I analyse how they work. I explore a range of aspects within the design from spatial organisation, materiality, circulation and user experience through drawing and diagramming. By extracting key design principles and testing how they can be applied within my own projects, precedents become a design tool rather than just a reference. This analytical approach helps inform meaningful architectural decisions from the earliest stages of a project.
